Surging Films & Theatrics Non-Union Season General Auditions 2018


Seeking: Actors, singers, and/or dancers, 18+, all types, genders, and ethnicities welcome and encouraged to submit. Special consideration will be made for younger performers with parental permission. As a company, we are growing at a substantial rate and are looking to expand our performer database. We will be reaching out to qualified candidates on a per show basis throughout 2018. Must have a professional work ethic and strong desire to work as a member of an ensemble. Must be ready and willing to be challenged both mentally and physically. Must be willing to shed preconceived notions and buy into new visions. At Surging Theatrics, we strive to create an atmosphere of respect, growth, and inclusivity, and we believe it is vastly important to work with others who share this view.


Our 2018 Season:
Never the Sinner - Leopold and Loeb’s “Trial of the Century” - at Prop Thtr in Chicago
Shrek! The Musical - at Harper College in Palatine
Fall/Winter show TBD



Audition Date: Saturday, January 6th from 1pm-7pm.  If there is an overwhelming request for earlier time slots, we will add an 11-1pm section.  You may or may not be needed for the full time slot.  There will be another audition for Shrek in the suburbs sometime in the Spring if you are unable to attend the January slot.

Should we accept your submission, you will be emailed a reserved time slot. You must have a reserved time slot to audition. Your email submission does not guarantee you a time slot.  You may or may not be needed for the entire hour and a half. Please plan accordingly.


Material to Prepare:
In regards to your monologue and/or song selection(s), please select something that you feel really shows off your strengths--something that you genuinely enjoy performing. Do not agonize over this choice. We’d just like to see you at your best.

ACTORS:
● 1 contemporary monologue, 1 minute or less.  May have you cold read from the script.


MUSICAL THEATER / ACTORS:
● 1-minute or less contemporary monologue of your choice (If auditioning solely for the musical, no monologue is required).
● 16-32 bars of a pop/rock musical theatre song of your choice.

*NO accompanist will be provided. Please bring an instrumental track on a device with a headphone jack*

● Be prepared to learn a series of short dance combinations taught by the choreographer for varying musical theatre styles. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and to practice. After you learn the combination, you will perform for the directors in small groups. PLEASE NOTE: Varying dance experience is welcome. This portion of the audition is more about how you move than what technical skills you do or don’t have.

DANCERS:
● Be prepared to learn a series of short dance combinations taught by the choreographer for varying musical theatre styles. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and to practice. After you learn the combination, you will perform for the directors in small groups. PLEASE NOTE: Varying dance experience is welcome. This portion of the audition is more about how you move than what technical skills you do or don’t have.


What to Wear:
Please come to the audition dressed to move (dance clothes or other comfortable clothing that will allow you to move freely). We do have restrooms to change; however, we suggest wearing comfortable clothing the entire audition. Bring dance shoes to change into once you are here. If you do not own dance shoes, wear tennis shoes. Tap shoes are not required.

What to Bring:
Please bring a hard copy of your resumé and headshot stapled together.  


Rehearsals and Tech:

2 days a week until tech starting in Mid-March for Never the Sinner and in June for Shrek.

Tech begins May 14th for Never the Sinner and performs until May 20th.

Tech begins July 30th for Shrek and performs until August 12th.

All roles are paid and pay varies between shows. You can choose our stipend option or ticket sale option. All performers will work as independent contractors and will be held to their contracted responsibilities.
